The Insectary Division of the Commission of Horticulture was responsible for collecting, breeding and disseminating predaceous insects as a means of controlling harmful insects. As part of that work, they collected and disseminated the native species of ladybird (ladybug) beetle or coccinellids, notably Hippodamia convergens. The Insectary is located within the grounds of Capitol Park.
