Photograph was edited for publication purposes
Photograph caption dated May 9, 1956 reads, "Body of apparent suicide victim identified by police as Merritt Barger, about 40, of 14052 Roblar Rd., Sherman Oaks, lies beside dead dog in car parked in Santa Monica Mountains above Woodland Hills. Police said Barger attached hose to exhaust and extended it into window-sealed automobile."
