The rear section of the single-screen Village Theater at 2925 Fulton Ave. is shown in this circa-1959 photograph. California architect Gastono “Gale” Santocono designed the Village, one of 15 movie theaters that he worked on in California, Colorado and Nevada. The Santoconos, who settled in Alameda, were a family of painters who continued the age-old tradition of Italian fresco, or “ceiling painting,” within California’s burgeoning theater industry. Visible in this photograph are several of Santocono’s creations, both along the walls and on the ceiling. The company that constructed and operated the theater was headed by Julian Harvey. Harvey, who also owned the Showcase Theater at 412 L St., was part of Northern California’s motion picture and theater business for well over 60 years. He operated the Village until 1972 and died in April of 1985.
