Second Growth Redwood Cutting Experiment, Project #688, Big River, Mendocino County, California. View of the experimental cutting plot after the second growth logs have been removed. The large log to the left is over five feet in diameter and was found to be quite rotten. Other logs on the ground are from two operations, four and twelve years earlier. Other refuse is from original logging 65 years earlier, and from tie makers who made ties from down stuff about 12 years ago. The refuse from the original logging and the tie operations present a much more serious fire hazard than the refuse left by the young growth. May 1923, E. Fritz
