Photograph article dated May 14, 1962 partially reads, "The Air Force is still talking about an impatient but imaginative sergeant whose well-channeled temper may bring him an A. F. Commendation Medal. He's Senior Master Sgt. Richard F. Bower of the 146th Air Transport Wing, Van Nuys. One day Sgt. Bower's temper - and his mechanical instincts - got the best of him, a combination that saved the Air Force $84,000. Bower, who lives in North Hollywood, is supervisor of engine maintenance at the Van Nuys Air Base. He is responsible for overhauling the giant 4,400-cubic-inch, 3,600-horsepower engines - the largest propeller-driven engines ever built - that power the 146th's C-97 Stratofreighter aircraft." Note: Sgt. Bower directs Arvin Johnson, left, and Lars Wood.
