Description
“Fort Hare from Sandile’s Kop.” Exterior view of the South African Native College with the main building on the right side of the road. James Stewart (1831-1905) had envisioned the Lovedale Institute developing into a national indigenous university and in 1916 the college was opened, by General Louis Botha (1862-1919), at Fort Hare, next to Lovedale. The college and Institute were kept as separate educational facilities and the first Principal of the college was Alexander Kerr (1885-1970). ❧ The Incehra mission, in the Eastern Cape, was renamed Lovedale ,1826, in memory of Dr John Love (1757-1825) and was later resituated on the Tyumie River in 1837. The mission ministered to the Xhosa speaking people and the mission became famous for its educational endeavours.
