Commonly referred to as a "foxtail" agave, due to the appearance of the flower stem (inflorescence) which Hertrich is here holding. The label that accompanies this photo in the album reads "No. 21 Agave attenuata, blooming for the first time, about 1911." William Hertrich was Superintendent of Botanical from 1927 to 1949.
