Description: In a letter dated September 1955 to Dan MacMasters at the Los Angeles Examiner’s Pictorial Living section, Smith described the Armstrong house as having no front or back. All four sides, he wrote, were designed for looking ‘at’ and for looking out ‘from.’ A glass roofed passage connects the house to the terrace and divides the house into three functional buildings: living and dining, kitchen and bath, and bedroom. An interior garden off the dining area and at each end of the passage reinforces the connection of the house to its site.
