Description
This photograph was taken from the back of the Crest Theater auditorium on Oct. 29, 1949. It shows the proscenium, a curtain-shrouded projection screen, numerous seats and walls adorned with gold-leaf fixtures. For the first time anywhere, a glass screen, composed of millions of glass fibers, was installed at the Crest to enhance film reproduction. It featured a sound system designed to eliminate any dead spots, along with ample air conditioning and a stage designed to handle television as well as motion picture projection. In all, the renovation of the theater – one touted at the time to be the most modern in the world – required the coordinated effort of hundreds of artisans, craftsmen and technicians.
