Description
A Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter flies by the Topanga fire lookout tower in the Santa Monica Mountains north of eastern Malibu. By 1970, persistent smog prevented the lookout station network from functioning effectively, and the emphasis shifted to patrol by helicopter and citizen reports. The Topanga tower was closed in 1972 and later demolished. The site is now the terminus of a popular trail hike. complete;
