Description
Key Words: Garner House, Memorial Park Mildred Steele, her husband, and their children lived in the Garner House in Memorial Park after the city purchased it from the Garner family, from 1947 to 1964. She and her husband moved to Claremont in 1926. Her husband worked as a caretaker for the entire property. She explained what the park looked like when they first moved into the Garner House: “It was orange and lemon trees. You couldn’t hardly see the house if you didn’t know it was there.” Mildred was in charge of supervising the use of the Garner House, renting it out for public use. At the time, this park was the only one in Claremont (except for a lawn bowling club). There was a guest house on the corner of the property that was used to run the youth program. Mildred’s daughter, Dolores, supervised the park's wading pool. Soon after the park was built, the city began having picnics in the park every year on the 4th of July. Several years later, they added a parade to the 4th of July celebration. Many organizations and individuals – including the high school and Claremont Men’s College – used the Garner House to hold parties.
