Description
This 1909 postcard shows the Capital Hotel at 7th and K Street. It opened in the 1860s, standing opposite the Golden Eagle Hotel. The Capital operated a restaurant and a barber shop with a manicurist on staff and comings and goings were frequently featured in the Sacramento Bee's society pages. The hotel's proximity to the Capitol building made it an attractive meeting place for state politicians and lobbyists. On the morning November 24, 1929 a fire broke out in the hotel, likely caused by the hotel's furnaces. The fire destroyed much of the interior and severely damaged the other businesses housed in the building. The hotel sustained more than 200,000 dollars in damages according to articles in the Sacramento Bee and was unable to recover from the loss.
