Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Statement to camera by Burt Talcott, U.S. Congressman, from his government desk, on inflation, budget deficits. Script reads, "Congressman Burt Talcott of Salinas said today that we can expect the administration to ask Congress for a substantial increase in income tax rates...maybe as high as seven per cent. Regarding this increase he had these remarks..." Segment 2 (silent): Firefighters working at an industrial blaze. The script refers to a fire in San Francisco's industrial district, but does not indicate accompanying film; however this is the only fire referenced in the day's news. "Another major fire is burning in San Francisco's Industrial District, sending up dense clouds of smoke. A three alarm fire broke out at the Halo Sales Company, at 44 Townsend Street. A million pounds of candles are stored in the building, most of them on the burning second floor. The fire is in a two story concrete building. Twenty employees scurried to safety when the blaze broke out at eight this morning. This fire is two blocks from another blaze in a four story warehouse..." Segment 3 (sound): Man being interviewed at a banquet table, speaking about the Vietnam war, "I won't put my party above my county." This appears to be U.S. Senator from Oregon Wayne Morse. He refers to Governor Hatfield, candidate Duncan, sanctuaries in Southeast Asia, U.S. relations with China, and the failure of Democratic senators to check a Democratic president "when in the cloakrooms many of them are willing to admit he's wrong." (There is reference to this clip in the broadcast script). Segment 4 (silent): Police arresting a man at a Mobile Service Station, patting him down, putting on handcuffs, placing him in police car. Story reads, "Police arrested a youthful bandit this morning who didn't hesitate to steal money, but balked at stealing a car from a service station...which was his downfall. Police units swarmed to the vicinity of Capitol Avenue and Story Road in hot pursuit of a bandit who robbed a San Jose businessman as he left his bank. Officers had a description of the gunman, and as they searched the corner, there he was. Detectives ordered the man to halt. One drew a gun, while the suspect, believed to be armed, was searched. The youthful robber, 25-year old Ross Tilden of 10337 Lochner Drive, has been booked into County Jail, charged with the robbery of businessman Alex Franco of 998 Noble Street. Police said Tilden went to the Bank of America at 2300 Alum Rock Avenue with the idea of robbing someone who made a withdrawal. Franco came out with a paper bag containing 1500 dollars. Police say the robber jammed a gun in the storekeepers ribs, took the money, and fled in his car. The vehicle broke down after Tilden threw his gun away. The robber borrowed a car from a service station, drove home and hid the money, then returned the car. That's when detectives arrived on the scene, and hustled Tilden off. The money was recovered, the gun is still missing." Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): Group of people, mostly men, seated around a conference table with others standing and seated around the room. Some are smoking. Appears to be related to story on the Blue Ribbon Committee on War on Poverty. Story reads, "Blue Ribbon Type Honchos. What's billed as a blue ribbon committee to look into the local war on poverty met for the first time today...amid some question of just how far they're supposed to go. The committee was appointed by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors to check up on how the Economic Opportunities Commission has functioned during its one year of existence. Today, the committee elected one of its members -- 38 year old Saratoga City Attorney Faber Johnson -- Chairman. Vice Chairman is Richard Morton and Father John Dwyer is Secretary. Members of the Committee were read a list of areas the supervisors want explored -- including how effective the EOC has been and how well it has been received by the community and poverty groups. Chairman Johnston also commented that there probably would be other areas to come to the attention of the committee. Dick Cox of the EOC said the poverty directors would cooperate with the commission...and County Counsel John R. Kennedy said the committee should be accorded the right to EOC records, although the committee has no power of subpoena. " Segment 2 (sound): Continuation of Blue Ribbon Committee story. Interview with Chairman Faber Johnston, responding to question of whether the work of his committee will be to investigate or evaluate the EOC. Segment 3 (sound): A. P. Hamann speaking to camera regarding San Jose City finances. Story reads, "Taxes are facing an increase in San Jose this year, unless there is a sharp rise in third quarter revenues. City Manager A. P. Hamann indicated today 'there will have to be some kind of an adjustment' to keep the city in the black. Hamann blamed needed police and fire personnel for the expected tax hike. He said the downtown area was not bringing in its share of revenues, putting added burden on the suburban developments. Hamann defended the city budget.."
