Description
Photograph article dated January 5, 1950 partially reads, "It's a mountain of white gold! And engineers and geologists say there are 22 1/2 million tons of it in sight - enough for the next 100 years. It was laid down by Mother Nature as an oyster bed thousands - maybe a million years ago - when the waters of the seas covered the area, now miles from the ocean. Moreover, there is only one other mountain like it now known in the world. That one is in England. This briefly describes the mountain of fossilized oyster shells which lies eight miles from Santa Susana in the beautiful rolling hills surrounding Simi Valley." Photograph caption reads, "To market - Alea Rodriguez holds sack to mixer as he prepared bags of ground oyster shell for feed market. Mine and plant is owned by B. J. Winslow of North Hollywood."; See image #00134234 for additional photo in this series.
