This photograph of the interior of Yee’s Herb Shop at 707-and-a-half J Street was taken in circa 1935. Its founder, Henry Yee, came to Sacramento from China in 1906 and would come to live a life of varied interests. After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1923 with a Master’s Degree in Engineering, he went back to his native Canton Province of China help construct a series of railways. Upon returning to Sacramento in 1930, he opened his medical practice, carrying on a legacy of Yee herbalists, dating back to the 1850s in places like Virginia City, Nevada, and Amador County. He also went on to found Yee Investments, establish Big Town Market in 1940, and both found and serve as President of Sacramento’s 1,500-member Yee Family Association. Yee passed away in June of 1979.
