Description
1989-1289. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 37. In front is a tomb which is labeled on its side "N. G. Curtis"; to the right behind the tomb is a low masonry fence; behind the fence are other tombs on the right and on the left of the principal tomb; two leafless trees rise toward the sky. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "directly south of city cemetary, once owned by Joseph A. Conboie, coroner of Sacramento in the '60's'...Mr. Conboie sold 6 1/2 acres of ground, west end of plot, to the Masonic Lodge in 1867.The early pioneers used the base of the large sycamore tree shown in picture below, as an oven for baking and cooking, tree is still standing, in good shape, to-day..."
