Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated March 31, 1944 reads, "Restrained action not apparent to the crowd in the packed federal courtroom takes place here as Jerry Giesler, Chaplin's attorney, left, and Charles H. Carr, United States prosecution attorney, confer on a legal technicality." With Giesler and Carr is Hans Reusch, witness for the defense; the three men are examining and discussing a diary, presumably belonging to Joan Barry.
