Photograph caption dated December 3, 1938 reads, "Here is a scene during the oratorical contest, with Miss Pius of Los Angeles High School on the stage delivering her extemporaneous address. All the speakers won the praise of the officials and the audience for their clear thinking and splendid delivery. Seven contestants were boys and four were girls."
