Description
Note: "Frau des Kämmerers, Brustbild v. dr. Seite, Lydia Mongwelune." (E-30-0,4). (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6).
Note translation: "Wife of an officer of the chamber, head and shoulders in profile, Lydia Mongwelune." (E-30-0,4). - Mrs Lydia Mongwelu ne, wife of the Chamberlain. Lydia Mongwelu ne, wife of the Chamberlain, is also a christian. Unfortunately it is made very hard for her, in her compound, to go the new way. Her husband is not in favour of God s matter . And his baptised wife s quiet way is like a permanent accusation against his own style of life. He is like someone half-blind, who shuts his eyes tight when light dazzles him, in the hope that that no ray of light will actually touch him. He plagues his Lydia with little acts of cruelty which she finds hard to bear. His greatest joy would be if his wife gave up her loyalty to christianity. But so far she has stayed loyal. She often comes crying to the mission station, pours out her heart to us, and gathers new strength for the further battle. Christians who have [always] had difficulties like this should be in our prayers at home especially in this wicked time, because now they live there in Fumban with no human help at all. (A. Wuhrmann, 1917, Commentaries to Slides from Bamum, E-30-0,6. K 365).
