Title supplied by cataloger. Thousands of cubic feet of gas escaping from a ruptured high-pressure main occurred on Georgia street, between 12th Place and Pico Blvd., forcing the evacuation of 68 persons from Georgia Hotel and causing the Evening Herald and Express to temporarily halt publication. The break was made by a mechanical ditchdigging machine preparing to lay a water main for the municipal Department of Water and Power, but was capped after a four-hour struggle by a Southern California Gas Co. crew. Photograph dated January 8, 1947.
