This is a photograph of Fr. Eckstein on a boat in Kaying [now Meixien], China. He hangs on to the side of the boat and has a hat in his hand. One can see the river and hills in the background. Born in Wisconsin, Fr. Eckstein came to Maryknoll in 1920 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1925. He was assigned to the Kaying mission in 1926 where he worked with Bishop Francis X. Ford. He served as Pro-Vicar of the Vicariate Apostolic of Kaying and as rector of the Seminary there. In 1940 he was appointed Society Superior of Kaying. His career included twenty-three years of service to the Society as a member of the Development department.
