Description
2017-0689. Bust-length portrait holding cigarette. Born in Guangzhou, China in 1896; came to California, first to San Francisco, then to Los Angeles in 1915. Pursued a career in filmmaking; working as writer and actor. Worked as advisor on D.W. Griffith's film Broken Blossom in 1919. Returned to China in 1921 where established film company, taught acting and scriptwriting in Hong Kong. Was pivotal figure in development of Chinese film industry. In 1923, cofounded with Joseph Sunn Jue, Grandview Film Company in San Francisco to make Chinese-language films for American market.
