Description
G.A.R. Day Clelebration. South Second & San Fernando Streets, San Jose In the years following the end of the American Civil War, hundreds of thousands of veterans of the Union Army, Navy and other branches of the military came together in several fraternal organizations for their mutual benefit and to commemorate their experiences. The largest of these organizations, known as the Grand Army of the Republic, was formed in 1866. Almost two hundred local branches, or posts, of the Grand Army of the Republic were founded in California by thousands of both local veterans and veterans of the war back east who had settled in California after 1865. A post was founded in San Jose in 1868. In 1890 San Jose was chosen to host that year's annual GAR Department Encampment, and hundreds of Union veterans of the Civil War from all over California descended on the city. (S. Nelson) Featured in the City with a Past exhibit with caption, "South Second Street looking north. Parade passing the Empire Fire House which burned in 1892."
