Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Description
Josephine Burch was born in 1922 to parents Crystal and Rufus Marshall. She attended Dayton Heights Elementary and Virgil Junior High School, and Belmont High School before receiving her degree in Education and a teaching credential from UCLA. She continued to receive her Master's in counseling from USC. Burch was among a handful of African-American teachers who began integrating LAUSD. She married her high school sweetheart, Bernard Burch and had three children. She passed away at the age of 94 in 2017.
