Description
Photograph is a portrait of Santa Clara County Health Department's Dr. Martin Fenstershieb.
Written on sleeve holding photograph: "Dr. Fenstersheib, S.C. County Health Dept." Dr. Fenstershieb led a team of County Health workers that began to educate people about AIDS. His team printed and distributed pamphlets to men and women in jail. They used the radio to urge people to change their behavior, visited gay bars to educate people and passed out condoms. Dr. Fenstershieb was also the only doctor in San Jose allowed to give the AIDS test when it became available in 1985. See Ted Sahl, "From Community to Closet"; (2002), p.198-199.
