City, county and state officials joined architects and planners for a news conference on the South Lawn of City Hall to release 1st Now, a 78-page proposal spearheaded by the non-profit group, Project Restore, to turn a two-mile section of First Street between Grand Avenue and East Los Angeles into a pedestrian-friendly, urban centerpiece for Downtown Los Angeles. The report calls for linking Boyle Heights, Little Tokyo, the Arts District and the Civic Center through a network of landscaping, lighting and street furniture. Congresswoman Jan Perry (9th District) and U.S. Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (33rd and 34th Districts) stand directly behind one of the proposal signs on the steps of City Hall. Standing with them, six unidentified gentlemen, possibly architects and planners of the project. Photo dated: September 1, 2005.
