City, county and state officials joined architects and planners for a news conference on the South Lawn of City Hall to release 1st Now, a 78-page proposal spearheaded by the non-profit group, Project Restore, to turn a two-mile section of First Street between Grand Avenue and East Los Angeles into a pedestrian-friendly, urban centerpiece for Downtown Los Angeles. The report calls for linking Boyle Heights, Little Tokyo, the Arts District and the Civic Center through a network of landscaping, lighting and street furniture. Congresswoman Jan Perry (9th District) and U.S. Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (33rd and 34th Districts) stand directly behind one of the proposal signs on the steps of City Hall.
