Description
The nave, apse and altar of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 3860 J St. are visible in this Feb. 29, 1932 photograph. The walls of the nave were lined with acoustical plaster, while the floor was made of marble. The far altar sits below a ciborium, composed of four yellow Sienna marble columns. The altar itself and the pews were constructed by parishioners who were also cabinet-makers. At the top of the photograph is a coffered wooden ceiling. The church’s stained glass was imported from the well-known Harry Clarke Studio in Ireland. The windows that overlook Sacred Heart’s sanctuary depict figures in Irish-style dress.
