This is a photograph of a young girl "Otsuko San reports after Mass to Fr. Ryan that today she begins her studies at the public school." Born in Massachusetts, Fr. Ryan came to Maryknoll in 1918 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 19, 1927. In 1928 he was missioned to Wuchow which he administered for five years. In 1935 he returned to the States to fill various offices such as, Mission Procurator and Director of the Brothers, while interesting himself in contacts with Oriental students in New York City. In 1937 he was sent to Rome for advanced studies in Church History, but poor health necessitated his recall to the United States. He served in various capacities at the seminary and was a member of the Seminary Council.
