Description
Pictured is Sacramento's Central Library as it looked in circa 1949. The view is from one of the upper floors of the Post Office, on the north side of I Street. After the City Commission, in 1914, purchased a section of land at Ninth and I Streets from Mrs. Adelheid Heison for 98,000 dollars, construction on the Florentine-style buff brick structure was started and completed by Knowles-Mathewson in 1918. Loring Rixford of San Francisco was chosen - via competition - to be the architect.
