Description
The Twentieth-Century Market, located at the corner of Sixteenth and L Streets and surrounded by elm trees, is the subject of this June 25, 1937, photograph. The business opened in September of 1935 as one of the Sacramento’s twelve Cardinal food stores. The structure was built by the owning Kaiser brothers, Jack, Fred and David for 30,000 dollars. Its streamlined design was developed by Sacramento architect Jens C. Peterson while its stucco frame construction was accented with greenish tones. Opening day at the market included the happy sounds of the Frankie Gordon Orchestra and emceeing by Roy Hamilton.
