Description
Note: Als Nr. 53 publiziert im Album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer', Neuenburg 1895.
(PST). -Cf. "Zuwachs des Basler Missions-Museums", Bd.1, S.19.
Note translation: Published as no 53 in the album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer', Neuchâtel 1895. (RI). - Caption in the album: "The chief's swordbearer. - The sword has a broad blade in which strange figures have been engraved. The handle is covered with gold plate. This swordbearer is wearing the king's headdress and is resting his arm on a drum decorated with human sculls. Before the arrival of the missionaries the drums were dipped in human blood, as was the custom in the whole Asante region. Today the people use the blood of sheep mixed with eggs. The white spots on the drum are eggshell." (PJ 07.1998) - The French caption calls this man "Un chef porte-glaive", refers to his headdress as the "casque de guerre du chef", and makes it clear that the skulls on the drum are from the heads of enemies. The reference to eggs is differently framed as a seperate sentence: "Souvent aussi des oeufs, dont on aperçoit quelques brins de coquille, sont comme offrande brisés sur ce tambour." (PJ 07.1998). - The photo is framed by a paper passepartout stuck to the cardboard. At the bottom end of the frame the picture has been extended by hand. (PST). - Cf. accessions list of the Basel Mission museum, vol.1, p.19.
