Title supplied by cataloger. Ron Settles (1959-1981) was a California State University, Long Beach football player who was arrested by the Signal Hill Police Department in 1981. The day after his arrest he was found severely beaten and hanging in his jail cell. Although the police said he committed suicide, there was much suspicion and controversy surrounding his death. No one was ever convicted of Settles' death, but the city of Signal Hill paid a large settlement to the Settles' family. Protestors gather in front of Signal Hill Police Department in a rally held for Ron Settles. Settles' father, Donell (not visible) spoke to a crowd of approximately 1,500-2,000 demonstrators, some of which can be seen here. Photograph dated December 6, 1981.
