Image of the shoreline as seen from the roof of a railroad train at end of the Los Angeles and Independence Wharf with the Santa Monica Hotel on the Palisades bluffs and the Santa Monica Bath House on the beach below in Santa Monica, California.
This is a copy negative (a photograph of another photograph). "Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co., Cal." and "From Watkins Yosemite Art Gallery, Portrait and Landscape, 26 Montgomery Street, and Woodward's Gardens, S.F."--text on item. Title transcribed from item; date devised by cataloger based on the history of the Santa Monica Hotel, which was built in 1877 and the destruction of the Los Angeles and Independence Wharf in 1879, and the history of the photographer who made two visits to Southern California in 1877 and 1880.
