Description
Interview with Marjie Nell Parker Mosley. Ms. Mosley is a gospel singer at New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 402 East El Segundo, under Reverend Dr. Lonnie Dawson. Ms. Mosley grew up as the seventh child in a large family of sixteen children, in a small community outside of Houston, Texas. Her mother was from Louisiana, and her father was a strict Southern Baptist. He was the pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, and she and her siblings sang in the choir. Since her family was too poor to afford music lessons for the children, she observed her older sister's music lessons, and absorbed her training this way. Some of her first memories of gospel include listening to The Caravans, The Gospel Harmonettes, and Shirley Caesar
their spirited musical delivery had a lifelong impact on her. In 1952, she followed her husband out to Los Angeles where she settled to raise her four children. She joined Greater New Life Church, where the choir was quite inspirational. Ms. Mosley also sang under the direction of Harrison Johnson in the Los Angeles Community Choir. The words and message of gospel music are the crux of her appreciation, and she mentions Thurston Frasier and James Cleveland as her top two examples of dynamic communicators. She takes her Christian faith and life very seriously, and expounds on the issue of gospel being used to make money, rather than to save, which is how she views the art. Her songs of praise of choice are "Lord, I Love You" and "Oh Lord, do it." Finishing the interview Ms. Mosley sings "I Know What Prayer Can Do."
