Mary Hunter was born in Carlinville, Illinois in 1868. In 1888 she received her B.S. in science from Blackburn College and in 1888 she moved with her family to the San Joaquin Valley, California. Life in various desert towns nurtured an interest in the desert's natural history and in the people living there. She proceeded to write various works on desert life, fiction with western themes and religious themes. Involved herself in the feminist, suffragist and birth control movements. Died in 1934.
