The unedited transcript of Phalana Tiller's interviews with Tom Tierney and David Hunter for the February 2013 episode of Drucker on the Dial entitled "Give Smarter." First, Tom Tierney, chairman and co-founder of the Bridgespan Group, and co-author of the book entitled Give Smart: Philanthropy That Gets Results, says that the book is meant to help people achieve more impact with the money they give away. He talks about the responses to the book, and says that the idea of anchoring the book in questions turned out to be really powerful. He talks about his Conversations with Remarkable Givers video project, and how in essence, it makes the content of the book, Give Smart, come alive. Tierney shares his experience with Bernie Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot, and his philanthropic endeavors. He talks about donor accountability, and collaboration in philanthropy. Tierney explains that the right cost is better than the wrong cost, and that all overhead is not bad. He talks about catalytic philanthropy, and how philanthropy can multiply. Tierney goes on to say that he would like to be remembered for helping people succeed in serving society. Next, author and consultant, David Hunter, explains his theory of change, which looks at issues of leadership, management, accountability, performance, results based budgeting, measurement and monitoring, and evaluation. Hunter talks about his consulting work, and how he holds himself accountable. He also talks about a set of tools that organizations can use to measure their own capacity for performance management. He goes on to say that he would like to be remembered for being a good husband and a good father, and for being an incisive thinker who was relentless in every project he undertook.
