Photograph of a painted portrait by Fray Orsi depicting Juan Bautista de Anza, founder of San Francisco, 1774. De Anza is mounted on a dark-colored horse and is facing to the left. He is wearing a cavalry uniform with a cape, tall boots, a saber, and a plumed hat. He has a thick beard and mustache. His horse is standing in ankle-high grass near the edge of a cliff overlooking a bay. De Anza was born in Mexico in about 1728 and died in Mexico on December 19, 1788.
