In: Scenes of Santa Clara Valley
The huge cut-end of fallen tree projects diagonally into the photograph; in front of the cut-end stands a man; he has a long bushy mustache which hangs down each side of his face; he wears a coat with a watch chain and a hat.
"A fallen monarch of the Coast Range - in the "Big Basin", 30 miles - west of San Jose. This tree undoubtedly was growing when Moses crossed the Red-sea. Through the patriotic efforts of one man - the "Big Basin" was purchased by the state of California - $500,000.00 having been appropriated for the purpose. Redwood posts - are split as easily as kindling wood, and last in the ground, longer than cedar - and practically do not decay. Curly-redwood is susceptible to an exquisite polish and for interior finishing, is much less expensive and quite as attractive as mahogony." "14 ft. log in Big Basin. A.P. Hill.
