Western Pacific Railway Company organized in 1903 to build railroad from San Francisco through the Feather River Canyons to Salt Lake City. Railroad constructed up the Middle Fork of the Feather, cutting over to the North Fork of the Feather at Spring Garden Ranch (between the Middle Fork and Spanish Creek). Construction camps established along route, initially small camps supplied by pack mules to blaze trail to build wagon road; wagon road to be used for supplies and equipment for railroad construction.
