Description
Photograph of a Chemehuevi Indian woman carrying a child (papoose) on her back, ca.1900. The baby, whose head is peeking around the woman's right arm, is wearing a knitted cap. The woman is wearing a polka dot and striped dress under a plaid blanket with tasseled edges wrapped around her torso, and a print kerchief around her head and knotted under her chin. She is standing outside, facing the right with her head turned to her right toward the camera. She has a grin on her face. Behind her a thatched dwelling and another structure (for storage?) are visible.
