Photograph caption dated July 31, 1946 reads, "Monroe Conlee - 340,000,000 Words - and He Retires." Note: Monroe H. Conlee, 68, began his career as a court reporter on December 1, 1902, before Superior Judge Waldo M. York. During the 48 years and 9 months Conlee has sat in the courtrooms, pen working those curlicues at the rate of 30,000 words a day - to build up an imposing estimated total of 340,000,000 words. He retired on July 31, 1946 from the court of Superior Judge Benjamin J. Scheinman. Conlee died on April 29, 1956 in Orange County, CA.
