Description
A typed description accompanies this photograph (note that this description was written some time ago, and several of the businesses mentioned no longer exist), and reads: The street in the immediate foeground is Lovell Ave., to the left is Bernard, to right, Madrona; the street downhill from Lovell is of course, Throckmorton. On Lovell to the left at Bernard is the existing McInnis house, buildin 1891 (verified). In center of block is an odd house with arched-enclosed entry & an unusual, gable-end decoration on the roof; it looks Scandinavian. There is a barn behind the house, with a horse grazing; all fenced in. On Throckmorton left to right: a large building with false-front and pitched roof, then at coner of Miller, you can identify the Wheeler Martin Store, a vacant lot with two signs, a small building, then the present laundromat building, a smaller building, a large vacant lot (where Odd-fellows Hall is [note - in 2019 it is the Throckmorton Theater]) to Madrona. There appears to be an empty lot on far side of Madrona. On corner of Throckmorton and Miller where "Moody Blues" is - all you can see is a large oak tree, then in distance on Miller, some buildngs. Lots of trees where bus station is now, tracks and a train + station. On the hill above town, you can see John Rea's "Daybreak" [note - house is at 153 Ethel Avenue, still there as of 2019], and far out to the bay and to left, you can see what appears to be a farm house and barn. You can also see the tracks comoing intowards town where Miller is farily staright, and a hillside house that ou can imagine could be Steeles. This photo is courtesy of the Bancroft Library.
