Black and white lantern slide featuring four Chinese men. A middle aged man sits at a table in front of a microscope and holds a book. Three other younger men stand behind him. This slide may have been taken at the London Missionary Society hospital at Hankow. The picture may have been taken to show the participation of Chinese nationals in Western medical education and practice, a sign of progress and modernisation in late Qing and early Republican China. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914.
