Description
Portrait of man in military, grenadier-style uniform, holding a large circular axe and wearing a tall, (bearskin?) fur hat. His trousers are edged with ribbon along the outer seams; his military-style jacket is long, with gold buttons up the front and fringed epaulets on the shoulders. He is wearing long white gloves with split cuffs, and a large white smock. The handle of what may be a sword or long dagger is also visible next to his right hand, with the tip right below the bottom of his smock. There is speculation that this is a sapper from a California militia, likely from the McMahon Guards of San Francisco.
