Description
Mary Ribzinski, known affectionately as Miss Ribs by her friends, was chairwoman of her local Red Cross, and helped organize a sizeable Red Cross nurse’s march held in Sacramento in May 1918. It featured many thousands of women of all ages from Sacramento and Yolo Counties. The first woman-centered parade of its kind in America, it was organized with the purpose of attracting more nurses to join the Red Cross war effort.
Mary worked as a nurse in the Radiology Department at Mater Misericordiae Hospital at 23rd and R streets until it relocated to 40th and J Streets and became Mercy Hospital.
Her photograph album features images of friends and family from 1920-1927. It provides a unique glimpse of 1920’s Northern Californian life with candid images from Sacramento, Sutter’s Fort, Placerville, Golden Gate Park and the Conservatory in San Francisco, West Sacramento, Moss Beach and Elmhurst.
Mary’s album includes snapshots of idyllic riverside picnics with friends, pets, and friend’s children, their celebrations of religious and secular holidays, her church parish and the affiliated private school of St. Francis of Assisi Church of Sacramento, and festive images from the Days of ’49 celebration.
