Description
Key Words: Claremont Churches, Pomona College Mary Poeton Helsley was born Bangor, Maine, where her father, Josiah Poeton, attended a Christian seminary. Because her father spoke French fluently, he served in France during the First World War. During the War, her mother moved their family to Claremont; her father joined them in 1921 after he finished his service with the French government. She attended Pomona College, where she studied English, Spanish, and French. Josiah Poeton organized a number of organizations, Bible studies, and even a boy scouts troop in Claremont. After her husband passed away, she moved into Pilgrim Place to serve as a house mother for a home of elderly women. She remembers several Claremont businesses from when she was younger, including a shoe store, a children’s dress shop, and a ten-cent store. She remembers going caroling on Christmas Eve in Claremont.
