The West Basin bascule bridge in San Pedro opened in 1912 to allow Southern Pacific and Pacific Electric lines to traverse the Los Angeles Harbor without impeding the paths of ships. In 1907, the United States War Department has ordered that existing trestle bridges be replaced by bascule drawbridges in order to accommodate ship traffic. The bridge was dismantled and sold for scrap in the mid-1950s. View of the C.A. Larsen departing the Los Angeles Harbor. Commander Richard E. Byrd was utilizing the whaling ship for his first exploration of Antarctica and the South Pole, via New Zealand. The ship can be seen passing by the raised West Basin bascule bridge as a tugboat maneuvers it. This image was taken the day of Byrd's departure on October 10, 1928.
