Description
This circa 1960 photograph shows two Third Street buildings, including the Bright Spot Market at 230 L Street. Two entrances to the Nishi Hotel, at 1204 and 1206 Third Street are on either side of the Manila Barber Shop at 1204 Third Street. Also visible is Everybody's Cafe at 1206 Third Street. A large painted sign on the front of the market advertises Pat-T-Pak beverages. Two men walk in opposite directions along the sidewalk.
Bright Spot Market opened in the late 1930s or early 1940s under the ownership of Emil Thomas and remained in operation until at least 1957. The upper level operated as a rooming house.
Leon Mercado, a Filipino immigrant owned the Manila Barber Shop before being struck by a train and killed in 1957.
Ponciano Rabanal, a Filipino immigrant and World War II veteran owned Everybody's Cafe from 1943 until his death in 1958.
The Sacramento Redevelopment Agency destroyed these buildings as part of a midcentury "urban renewal" program.
