Description
This November 4, 1937, photograph captures The Pacific Gas and Electric Building and other businesses on the south side of K Street, where it meets Eleventh Street. The PG and E building is flanked to the left by the Zinke’s Shoe Renewing Corporation and the Boys Store. To the right are the Hotel Regis, Stovall Rocks and the venerable Hotel Sacramento. The PG and E building was constructed in 1912/13 for 100,000 dollars. Sitting on the northeast corner of Eleventh and K Streets, the four story structure was designed by local architect E.C. Hemmings. In addition to its public utility commitments, PG and E – at the time this photograph was taken – operated a street car line that ran throughout Sacramento’s central city, and as far east as Oak Park and south as Curtis Park. The company entered the Sacramento streetcar market in 1906 and provided the service until the mid-1940s. In the photograph’s foreground, PG and E streetcar tracks line K Street.
