Black and white missionary showing Reverend C Ransome, a missionary of the Methodist Missionary Society (earlier the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society) sitting with a pile of debris created after the burning of traditional Nigerian religious idols by Christian converts. Nigerian villagers stand in the background of the image. Vessels, bowls and broken pottery can be seen in the aftermath of the fire. Reverend Ransome holds a small bowl as he squats next to the embers. The caption to this image reads: "Rev. C Ransome handling embers of idols etc. publicly burned 1934, in market place." This image was probably taken in Akpugo village, Enugu state, southeast Nigeria. This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital, run by the Methodist Missionary Society in southeast Nigeria.
